2023 Best Print Ad
First appearing in Lancaster County Magazine’s (LCM) All Things Home section of their March 2023 edition, this ad focused on enticing readers to utilize GR Mitchell’s talented design team to turn their home remodel dreams into reality. However, being situated within the pages of this special advertising section increased the challenge of overcoming ad blindness, a phenomenon where readers tend to ignore content that they know is not editorial. Let’s face it, nobody likes to admit that advertising works on them, that they’re that easily influenced. That’s why this ad took an advertorial approach, presenting its promotional message in a way that looks and feels like an objective journalistic article and less like an ad, pairing seamlessly with the editorial style of the rest of the publication. Once the reader’s attention is captured, this ad demonstrates how GR Mitchell’s design team, who takes top billing in the artwork, serves as an invaluable asset in your home remodeling journey. As Lancaster’s preferred building material supplier, the messaging includes an explanation of how GRM’s team pairs homeowners with the most qualified builders and remodelers, an approach that benefits not only homeowners but also our pro-customers in the form of highly qualified leads. To strengthen the credentials of our team beyond years of experience, readers are reminded that GR Mitchell is not only an active member of the Lancaster Building Industry Association but also has a history of earning LCM’s Best of Lancaster award for cabinetry. Aspirational imagery of a custom bath, dreamy laundry room, and high-end kitchen (serving as background) further validates the design prowess of GRM’s team.

2023 Supply Company of the Year – Entry 1
While we can trace our roots in the lumber industry back to the late 1800s, our organization officially incorporated as GR Mitchell in 1969. And while our product assortment has undoubtedly changed since then, lumber remains at the core of what GR Mitchell provides to our customers. With guidance from the industry’s best, we’ve let our customers guide us on the products we need to have at the ready to make their jobs run efficiently and profitably. Beyond lumber, GR Mitchell’s assortment includes everything from the smallest nut, fitting, or fuse up to stairs, windows, decking, and other materials necessary to build beautiful homes. GR Mitchell’s dependable delivery of building materials is the most common service we offer to our customers, but our kitchen design team has refined its ability to act as an extension of builders and remodelers to delight homeowners. But the services we offer to our customers don’t stop there. GR Mitchell’s architectural millwork team can make any builder’s (or their homeowner customer’s) vision for custom trim, one-of-a-kind doors, or historical reproductions a reality. With over 100 years of experience on staff, they can turn raw wood into whatever you can imagine. And if installation is a requirement, GR Mitchell’s turnkey construction division, Prime Builder Services, offers builders an all-in-one supply and install option, too. But offering best-in-class products and services doesn’t mean much if nobody is aware, so sharing information about the building industry and GR Mitchell is a top priority. Weekly training from manufacturer reps is an invaluable asset to our internal team, learning about the latest and most beneficial advancements in building materials. We extend these learning sessions, in addition to product engagement events, to our customers. Frequent check-ins with customers from our team, in addition to bulk emails and social media content, ensure that GR Mitchell’s customers stay fully informed.

2023 Project Manager of the Year
During Nick Helmick’s 7 years with EGStoltzfus Homes, his role has evolved from site manager to project manager. From the first year of employment at EGStoltzfus, Nick demonstrated a desire to not just “go to work” but to actively engage with his work family. Nick was asked to co-chair the company’s Safety Committee and then, eventually, was asked to chair it. He regularly leans on his knowledge gained from field experience, combined with skills in the office, when solving problems with the other project managers. One of Nick’s strengths is finding ways for the field supervisors and project managers to collaborate on a more routine and consistent level. Part of Nick’s role is to review new home sale contracts for accuracy, design and estimate custom option requests for buyers, submit building permit applications, review plot plans and building construction plans, approve drawings and proposals, and be aware of and respond to ever-changing building code requirements. Nick organizes and prepares information to train real estate agents when we start selling in new communities. He serves on the Merchandizing, Purchasing, and Execution team, reviewing all proposed customer options and selections in the design studio. Additionally, Nick is among a select group of team members who meet monthly to vet new products and construction methods while considering value engineering along with long-term performance.
2023 Sales Professional of the Year – Entry 1
Christine O’Donnell maintained a tireless focus on our customers’ needs through an unprecedented home-building market in memory. In 2022, a period of very high demand pitted against lingering supply chain challenges, she set an example of communication and anticipation, challenging the entire team she worked with to stay focused on “Our Guiding Principles”. Christine is an example of a passionate customer-focused sales specialist who embodies our Mission. She is a Sales Specialist who meets general members of the public and acts as the forward-facing representative of the company. Christine guides buyers through the construction process by securing a home plan on customer-selected lots, ensuring deadlines are met, and works to choose the best structural options to fit the buyer’s needs. Christine has also been recognized among Coldwell Banker’s Top Sellers in Central PA and contributed immensely to EG Stoltzfus Homes success as our Sales Specialist in both our fastest-selling single-family and fastest-selling attached homes Neighborhoods in 2022.
2023 Sales Professional of the Year – Entry 2
From his first day on the job, Todd Shanks has contributed to company results. In his first year, he produced more sales than other agents with 3 times more experience. His ability to align his strengths & values to those of his customers, along with strong prospecting skills, makes him a true professional. He exceeded the first year’s sales goals and is on pace to break that record again this year. A large part of his success started 15 years ago in wine sales, where he developed the habits of a successful salesperson, but what is most impressive is his ability to transition from industry to unrelated industry, highlighting his sales ability. Insurance sales is a tricky business. Anyone can sell a policy, but few can put a customer in a better position than when he or she found them. One must have a desire to perpetually learn and apply what they’ve learned to unique customer needs as well as an ever-evolving economy and emerging risks. Todd’s ability to learn about each customer and solve problems, often before they even become a problem, is special. His dedication to his customers is evident by obtaining his Professional Risk Consultant designation in his very first full year as an agent! Unlike a lot of salespeople these days, he loves cold calling and visiting new and interesting businesses. He quickly finds ways to bring value, which has led to lots of opportunities new salespeople typically don’t enjoy.

2023 Remodeling Projects Achievement Awards
2023 Best Addition over $100,000
In 2022, we met with the owners to discuss how to change their seldom-used rear patio into a space that could be usable year-round while retaining the feeling of being outdoors. We expanded on the owner’s initial design concept to create a truly unique project. The sunroom addition creates a warm and inviting space to serve as an ideal space where our customers can gather with family and friends or relax for a quiet evening at home. The exterior finishes complement the existing house, including a matching reverse gable roof with an ellipse window. The roof structure was designed and hand-framed to allow dramatically high ceilings while not interfering with existing second-story windows. Inside features, including wood vaulted ceilings, stucco walls, bluestone floors, and natural stained wood trim, evoke the feeling of the outdoors. The existing fireplace stone has been repaired and cleaned and is now a main focal point of the room. With the room having only one exterior wall, it was important that the window and door glass area be maximized to bring the feeling of being outdoors, indoors. This was achieved, in part, through the installation of an oversized gas strut window, which opens to allow for a sizeable unobstructed opening to the outside.
2023 Best Basement Remodel Over $100,000
This client came to us looking to finish their basement space to accommodate a wide variety of needs. The desired uses included a gym space, sauna, kitchen area, game area, media area, full bath, and unfinished storage area. The remodeled basement would be used mainly by their four children, all teens or pre-teens, to hang out and have friends over while occasionally using it for entertaining other family guests. Although an initial concrete budget was not necessary for this project, the clients knew it would be over $100k. The existing space already had two egress windows, providing an appealing daylight level. Some details that were incorporated into the remodeled basement were coffered ceilings, built-in bookshelves and gaming storage, shiplap walls, and stained box beams. The stained elements also came into play with coordinating stained shelves and bar countertops. A combination of wide plank LVP, plush carpet, large format LVT, and rubber flooring was chosen for the basement floors. Large mirrors and an abundance of storage for weights and gym equipment were installed around the workout area. Adjoining the gym, a multi-person cedar sauna features ample bench seating and space for the necessary heating equipment. The combination bar-kitchen space features white cabinetry, textured granite and wood countertops, tile backsplash, and shiplap trim on the face of the island. Overall, the finished product is a clean, welcoming area featuring many unique elements that add to its appeal, including a mix of metals, contrasting textures, neutral tones, and rustic elements.
2023 Best Bathroom Remodel $50,000 – $100,000
This client had an adjacent room next to their bedroom that was not used that they wanted to turn into a primary bathroom and closet area. They only utilized a small closet in the room. They desired a double vanity, shower, and a slightly larger walk-in closet. They hoped to gain the desired space but also make it a space representing their personality and style. We created a space with a ton of flair, including a floating vanity, mitered vanity top, blue herringbone tile, gold fixtures, and black hex floor. We could take that existing closet, create a larger floor plan, and install closet cabinetry that better meets their needs.
2023 Best Bathroom Remodel Over $100,000
With retirement around the corner, these clients were ready to update their home to better serve their needs for years to come. Their desire for the primary bathroom area was to make it more open, bright, and functional but stay true to their traditional home. They wanted a larger shower, double vanity, possibly a make-up area, and better closet space. With no specific budget in mind, we were able to elevate and update the space easily. We opened up the floor plan, which allowed for a large walk-in shower with entire quartz walls, a free-standing tub, and a custom vanity with a linen cabinet. The existing his and hers closets were removed and we created a large single closet with a make-up vanity area and custom closet shelving. The wallpaper, colors, and wainscoting details stay true to the home’s feel.
2023 Best Commercial Project
Dan and Janet Metzler had moved their building business to Dan’s father 20 Acre Farmette, in the late 1990’s. The farmhouse where Dan grew up was converted into office space, and he found himself working each day from an office space that was his family’s dining room growing up. The outbuildings were converted from farm buildings into storage and shop space for the business, and the property served the business well for 20+ years. Jordan Metzler knew he wanted to continue to grow the business and build on the foundation his parents and grandparents before him had provided. It was important to him to keep the family business on his grandfather’s land since 1951. The location felt right to him, but the buildings and their uses had grown outdated and were, at a minimum, in need of repairs. Jordan’s vision was to convert a portion of their large storage barn into a unique and impressive client meeting space. It was a far stretch from the current use and condition of the building. Through input from the entire Metzler team, the concepts and initial designs were refined until they had a final design, which would consist of a welcoming entry space and large conference room with plenty of wall space for showing clients inspiration photos. It also includes an area where clients can view all their selection samples in one area, allowing Metzler Home Builders to better guide their clients through the selection process. The impressive restoration of this old building provides a proper representation of the business that it serves. Original beams are exposed, and the old wood siding from the exterior was utilized to make the interior casing and baseboard for the new space. Every detail points to the dedication and craftsmanship of the Metzler Home Builders team.
2023 Best Interior Project Over $50,000
While this 3rd-floor primary suite had plenty of space, the layout and function of the area were undesirable. There was no entry door to the bedroom, the closet was tight and narrow, and the bathroom was small and dark. A large bonus area was used as an office but not often used. The washer and dryer were also on the third floor but hardly usable at the back corner of the existing closet. The goal was to redesign the current layout to allow for a better bathroom, closet, and laundry space. With the office space now removed, we were able to take that room and install custom closet cabinetry for a large walk-in closet. The closet now has an entrance to the laundry room as well as to the bathroom. Due to an existing chimney stack, the shower location stayed the same. However, it now is open to the opposite side, creating a larger bathroom space and plenty of natural light. Because of the location of the 3rd-floor stairs and landing, a standard door was taking up a lot of space. A stained barn door was installed that matched the rustic style the client desired.
2023 Best Kitchen Remodel $50,000 – $100,000 – Entry 1
After recently retiring from a career in the culinary arts and moving across the country, the owners found a home they loved with a kitchen that left much to be desired. The owners wanted a large open floor plan that would allow them the ability to meal prep in a more efficient manner while also entertaining guests. Initially, the floor plan included a kitchen that was broken up into two separate areas, with the food prep area isolated by cabinetry on three sides and a dining room separate and apart from the kitchen altogether. With the homeowner’s vision in mind, the interior walls came down, and the kitchen layout was reconfigured. The new kitchen design features Light Mocha-painted cabinets with Black Pearl granite countertops around the perimeter. The island inverts this color theme with iron-painted cabinetry and a light-colored River Blue granite countertop. In the background of the kitchen, the varying shades of blue found in both the herringbone pattern and vertically offset porcelain tile complement the River Blue island granite. All of this is highlighted by new energy-efficient LED undercabinet lighting, LED recessed lighting, and LED pendant lights.
2023 Best Kitchen Remodel $50,000 – $100,000 – Entry 2
2023 Best Kitchen Remodel $50,000 – $100,000 – Entry 3
Due to a load-bearing wall, these homeowners had a kitchen space that was completely blocked off from the rest of their living space. Their goal was to remove the walls and gain an open floor plan as well as more cabinetry space. The project also includes new flooring for the entire level of the home and the beam to allow for the removal of the current kitchen walls. We stuck to stock cabinetry for most of the kitchen to keep the cost down so we could include more cabinetry and an island. A glass backsplash, white GE Cafe appliances, and quartz countertops in the kitchen were installed, which gave the kitchen a higher-end feel. New LVP and trim work were installed throughout the entire space, including a bedroom and stairs.
2023 Best Kitchen Remodel Over $100,000
The “K” Remodel transformed a Lititz couple’s kitchen from dark and dated to the epitome of modern elegance and luxury, exemplifying the quality, custom work Turnberry Construction Group completes throughout every one of its projects. Every dollar of the budget was allocated strategically to maximize the sustainability, ease of use, and possibilities for the homeowners. Each element of the kitchen was selected with the utmost care and attention to ensure that the client’s expectations were not only met but exceeded. The entire first floor of the residence was restructured, allowing the homeowners to enjoy a more modern open floor plan and an improved version of the main level of their home. With an open floor plan, their family can enjoy moments together while being in different rooms! Other selections were made to ensure the kitchen renovation was optimized for maximum user experience. Before their upgrade, the first floor contained a combination of hardwood and tile flooring, breaking up the room visually and contributing to visual clutter. The cabinetry and appliances in the kitchen were dull and out of date. After in-depth discussions with the homeowners, Turnberry Construction Group was able to enhance the brightness of their kitchen through the strategic use of continuous High-end Luxury Vinyl Plank, cabinetry, and appliances in lighter shades that reflect the natural light shining through the existing kitchen windows. The upgraded kitchen features include state-of-the-art appliances, like a gourmet ice maker, a beverage center, and a commercial-style gas range top. Additional features like the quartz countertop, a chimney hood, and a pot filler faucet elevate the client’s kitchen to a chic, elegant experience. Each feature of their new kitchen was selected to simultaneously adhere to the present-day aesthetic while ensuring a sense of class and timelessness that will last for decades.
2023 Best Kitchen Remodel Under $50,000
This entry highlights the company that designed and installed the flooring and backsplash of this beautiful kitchen remodel. The product vision came when the client, working with a builder (See Kitchen Remodel entry over $100,000), wanted to freshen up their home and make it more open. The kitchen was dark and a bit dated, and the floors were different throughout. The customer wanted continuous floors with a natural, lighter feel. Walls were removed, kitchen remodeled, new paint, new floors & backsplash (the backsplash was revised in new plans to go up around the hood vent). Now, the kitchen has an updated modern look with a classic twist to stand the test of time. Martins Flooring installed all new underlayment, Knight Wood Glued Down LVP throughout the majority of the first floor, a beautiful natural 2”x10” Backsplash tile, with a very natural looking variance.
2023 Best Outdoor Living Project over $50,000
When we first looked at this project, the treated wood balcony needed extensive repairs or replacement. The owners were in the early stages of transforming their property, which included the installation of a pool, and they wanted to have a balcony constructed to complement the new outdoor living space. The owner came to us with an idea for a balcony that would also act as a covered patio for a future outdoor kitchen and seating area below. The balcony design maximizes open space through structural beams and columns. The final structure expanded the existing balcony footprint and achieved its objectives for outdoor entertainment. The second-floor balcony features Timbertek Vintage PVC decking and Keylink cable railings. A rain collection system was installed between the decking and beaded wood ceiling of the covered patio to allow the space below to remain dry and usable no matter the weather. The stone façade on the column bases and fireplace tie together the new pool hardscaping and stone façade on the house. To top it all off, the patio space below features a remote-controlled gas fireplace, rustic wood mantle, recessed lighting, and two oversized ceiling fans.
2023 Best Whole House Remodel $250,000 – $500,000
Should we move to another house? Should we build new? Should we just stay where we are and renovate? These questions that many ask were familiar to this couple, and they pursued each one. Being always open to moving, they took a 10-month hiatus from renovation planning to fully discern these questions. Ultimately, they decided to renovate their home to improve their family’s function. Focusing on the family’s goals for the renovations, our design team took to the task of reshaping their home. The unused dining space was repurposed as an office space and laundry room. While maintaining the same footprint, the kitchen was redesigned to create better-utilized cabinets. The family room updates created a brighter space accented with cabinets and floating shelves on each side of the refaced fireplace. On the second floor, the shared bath for this family of four was a central pain point. The other small bath, part of the home’s original primary suite, was only used by an occasional guest. Redesigning these areas created a private bath for the owners with a larger double bowl vanity and custom tile shower. The kid’s bath also features a double bowl vanity with a separate room for the tub and toilet, adding to its versatility. A walk-in closet was added to the owner’s bedroom, and four solar-powered skylights were added to the southern slope of the room to flood the dingy bedroom with natural light. Additional renovations included new windows, interior and exterior doors, an HVAC system, trim work, shelving, painting, and flooring, left no space the same. These changes, along with a bay window in the eating area and a waterfall countertop in the kitchen, bring a new feel to this home. The owners say it best. “Without [our builder’s] expertise, we would still live in a house that didn’t work for us. Now, we essentially have a brand new home while keeping our great location!”
2023 Best Whole House Remodel Over $500,000
In the realm of home renovation, every project stands as a testament to the union of vision, skill, and dedication. This statement couldn’t be more accurate for the recent transformation of a 3,500-square-foot ranch home that our team had the honor of revitalizing. This project, encompassing interior and exterior renovations, showcases our commitment to excellence and our knack for merging functionality with modern aesthetics. The exterior of the house received a thorough makeover. Aged siding was replaced with state-of-the-art materials that fortify the home and enhance its curbside charm. The roofing was redone to ensure longevity while echoing the home’s renewed spirit. Furthermore, the addition of a brand-new front porch and a spacious 800 S.F. garage seamlessly marries the home’s timeless character with contemporary desires. Inside, the transformation is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Our team reimagined the floor plan, breaking barriers and rebuilding spaces to cater to the modern homeowner. The kitchen underwent a tasteful facelift, blending both beauty and utility in its design. Adjacent to it, a stylish bar area invites relaxation and entertainment, a testament to our understanding of today’s lifestyle needs. However, the primary bedroom and the adjoining owner’s suite bathroom genuinely epitomizes our innovative spirit. The bathroom, a statement of luxury, introduces a wet room concept. Here, the bath and shower coexist in a harmonious space, entirely tiled to give a sense of luxury. A solid glass divider creates an illusion of boundless space and offers a touch of modern elegance. In conclusion, this project is more than just a renovation; it’s a transformation – of space, design, and living experience. Through meticulous planning, expert craftsmanship, and an unyielding passion for excellence, we have given a classic ranch a new lease on life.
2023 Best Whole House Remodel Under $250,000
Our whole house remodel transformed this previously untouched home from the 1980s into a modern, comfortable, and functional living space from top to bottom. The client’s vision of what they wanted is reflected throughout the home, from the contemporary style to the most minor finishing details. Walking through the front door and into the living room, you’ll notice the revamped fireplace, including custom cabinetry, ceramic tile surround, and granite hearth. With the removal of interior walls, the natural hickory hardwood is the backdrop for the open floor plan leading into the kitchen. The new kitchen features painted inset cabinetry, granite countertops, lantern tile backsplash, and a large island. Daylight from the southern exposure is maximized through new, oversized windows over the sink. You’ll find the new laundry room, butler’s pantry, and powder room just off the kitchen. The main stairs were reconstructed to feature natural hickory treads open on one side, including custom wainscot paneling from the first to the second floor. The remaining portion of the first floor was transformed into a primary suite. This includes a walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, handmade cement floor tiles, and custom cabinetry. Upstairs, you will find three newly finished bedrooms, including all new trim work, lighting, and floor finishes. A new, larger guest bathroom features an oversized walk-in shower, soaking tub, custom cabinetry, and handmade cement floor tiles.
